AUTHORS AT THE MERCY OF ALGORITHMS #1

Many readers, and perhaps some authors, don’t know of the power of algorithms and how they can make or break the success of a book. The first instance is pre-orders. Pre-orders will determine if online retailers (cough, Amazon, et. al) send messages and feature any one book. The more pre-orders, the more they’ll feature the book. It will also determine how many books their publisher will print. The best written book can fail if these algorithms aren’t put into play. It is no longer just about the craft, as it should be.
